Patrick (James) Eggle

Patrick James Eggle built his first guitar at the age of fifteen as a school project. By the time it was complete, he was already dissatisfied with the results and decided to pull it apart and start again from scratch. So started a lifelong obsession

Mark Bailey Guitars

Mark Bailey Guitars

Mark Bailey started his guitar making career at the age of 18 with "Patrick Eggle" guitars working with people like Trevor Wilkinson, Gary Levinson, Rob Williams and Patrick James Eggle and myself (Peter Allen).
I met up with Mark again at an Acoustic Guitar Makers' Show in Cheltenham 2008 and was very pleased to see how well Mark had done and witnessed first hand how well he instructed visitors in a free lesson in bending the sides of an acoustic guitar!
Mark explained to me how his partner, Carol Davies, and he originally started his company "Bailey Guitars" in a double-decker bus and how he has now moved to purpose built premises in Ayrshire.
Mark now takes in people for residential guitar making courses at his base in Ayrshire, 50 miles south of Glasgow. The popularity of his "Build your own guitar" courses has allowed others to pursue their ambitions to build their own dream. Some of Mark's pupils have even gone on to start up their own guitar making businesses, including Nathan Sheppard Guitars.

Jay Dee Custom Guitars

Jay Dee Custom Guitars

John Diggins has been making guitars in Birmingham (UK) for a very long time. In fact Rob Williams (in his early working life) used to work for him, learning the trade of guitar making. John is the man who built Mark King bass - Level 42 and also Tony Iommi's SG - Black Sabbath, not forgetting Angus Young plays a Jaydee SG!
What many people don't know is that John Diggins (at one time) was used as a sub-contractor for the finishing of over 50% of the Patrick Eggle Guitars, way back in the days when they were made in Coventry which is when I made his acquaintance.

Rik Middleton

RIK MIDDLETON - Classical Guitar Maker - Coventry

Over a number of years Rik has had experience of many aspects of woodworking and then tried guitar making. Over 10years ago he has made many fine instruments. He made two guitars and entered them into a competition. The chief judge was a well known instrument maker so he wasn't expecting much more than constructive criticism. What he got was a silver medal and a gold medal and a great deal of congratulations. So he gave up teaching and became a full time Luthier at the end of 1994.
He says " I suppose I might tell you of the master builders I have studied under but the fact is that I am completely self taught. Never mind that, I am hidebound by no masters prejudices, the instruments speak for me".
